Cross-reference depth

Links are ranked by relevance, so you can keep only the closely-related ones. At Tight, many verses will have no links at all — only the strongly-connected ones show.

Tight keeps only high-relevance references. Balanced adds moderately-related ones. All shows everything, including loose thematic links.

Listening

Voice

Chapters are read by recorded human narrators where the translation has them (WEB and BSB do; more with a Bible Brain key). Realistic Google voices can be added under Advanced, and then also narrate the walks. There is no robotic device voice.

“Recorded narration” uses a human narrator when one exists for the translation. Realistic voices appear here once the Google proxy is set up under Advanced.

Realistic voices, recorded narration and keys
In Google Cloud: enable the Cloud Text-to-Speech API and create an API key. In Netlify: Site configuration → Environment variables → GOOGLE_TTS_KEY = your key, then redeploy and paste your proxy URL here. Synthesized chapters are cached on this device. Neural2 voices are inexpensive; Studio voices are premium-priced.
Only needed if this site hasn’t been set up in config.js. Create the tables once by running supabase/schema.sql in the project’s SQL editor, and add this site’s address under Authentication → URL Configuration.
Request one free at 4.dbt.io/api_key/request (Faith Comes By Hearing). Stored only on this device. When set, chapters use Bible Brain recorded audio where available.

About Waymark

A waymark is a sign set up along a road so travellers can find the way (“Set up waymarks for yourself”, Jeremiah 31:21). All 66 books and every chapter are pulled on demand and then cached on your device — chapters you've already opened stay readable offline, and the app itself loads without a connection.

Bible text → World English Bible via the HelloAO Free Use Bible API (bible.helloao.org, public domain, no key).
Cross-references → OpenBible relevance-scored set (Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, CC-BY) via the HelloAO API, loaded per chapter and filtered by the depth setting above.
Geography → Relief from AWS Terrain Tiles (open data); coast, rivers and lakes from Natural Earth (public domain). Boundaries of each period from historical-basemaps (A. Ourednik, CC BY-SA), choosing the snapshot closest to the chapter — Genesis shows the world c. 2000 BC, Daniel c. 500 BC, the Gospels c. AD 1. Over 350 places come from a built-in gazetteer at their traditional or best-attested sites, and some 750 more that the Bible names, from Theographic Bible Metadata with OpenBible.info coordinates (CC BY), each lit only in the verses that name it; eras and locations are approximate and scholarly estimates differ. Where a place’s name stands for a person (Cush the father of Nimrod, Judah the son of Jacob) the map stays still; which verses those are comes from Theographic Bible Metadata (R. Rouse, viz.bible, CC BY-SA).
3D walks → Every scene is modelled from scratch in the browser over the real terrain of its site. They are artistic reconstructions drawn from history and archaeology, not photographs of the past.
